Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Baked Ziti with Tomato Basil Sauce.
Step 1
In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent, about 5 minutes.
Step 2
Stir in the tomato puree and water, and let the mixture cook for 10 minutes.
Step 3
Add the white sugar and fresh basil to the pot. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Step 4
While the sauce is simmering, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add the ziti pasta and cook, stirring occasionally, until al dente, about 8 minutes. Drain the pasta and return it to the pot.
Step 5
In a large skillet, heat over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, stirring until browned and crumbly, about 5 to 7 minutes. Drain any excess grease and mix the cooked beef with the pasta. Add enough tomato sauce to lightly coat the pasta.
Step 6
In a separate bowl, mix the ricotta cheese with a little water until it reaches a spreadable consistency.
Step 7
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 8
Spread a ladleful of sauce in the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking dish. Layer half of the pasta mixture, followed by all of the ricotta cheese, peas, and half of the Parmesan cheese. Add sliced eggs on top of the pasta, then cover with half of the mozzarella cheese.
Step 9
Pour the remaining pasta mixture on top, followed by the remaining Parmesan cheese, sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
Step 10
Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and bubbly. Allow the dish to stand for about 10 minutes before slicing to ensure the pieces hold together.
