Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Cheesy Basil Bread.
Step 1
Start by mixing 2 cups of warm water with 1 tablespoon of sugar in a large mixing bowl. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Next, sprinkle 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast over the surface of the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it forms a creamy layer on top. This means your yeast is active and ready to go!
Step 2
Once the yeast is bubbly, stir it into the water. Add 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 cup of bread flour, mixing until you have a loose batter. Gradually stir in another cup of flour, then fold in 1 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese, 1/4 cup of milk, and 1 tablespoon of dried basil. Keep mixing until everything is well combined.
Step 3
Now it’s time to add the remaining flour. Gradually mix in the last 2 cups of flour, adding it in 1/2-cup increments until the dough starts to come together. Turn the dough out onto a well-floured surface and knead it for about 5 to 8 minutes. The dough should be thoroughly mixed but still a bit sticky. If it’s too sticky, don’t hesitate to add a little more flour as you knead.
Step 4
Once kneaded, shape the dough into a ball and place it in an oiled bowl. Turn the dough over in the bowl to coat it with oil, then cover it with a cloth. Let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which should take about an hour.
Step 5
After the dough has risen, gently press down on it with your fist to deflate any large bubbles. Turn it out onto a floured surface again and knead just enough to eliminate any remaining bubbles, about 1 minute. Divide the dough into two equal pieces and shape each piece into a round ball.
Step 6
Prepare a baking sheet by spraying it with nonstick cooking spray. Place the dough balls on the sheet and, using a sharp knife, make a shallow X cut on the top of each loaf. Cover them with a towel and let them rise again until they double in size, which should take about 25 minutes.
Step 7
While the dough is rising, preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Once the loaves have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes, or until they are beautifully browned and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Step 8
To serve, slice each loaf into 8 wedges and enjoy the warm, cheesy goodness with your favorite meal or as a delightful snack.
