Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Delicious Red Velvet Cake.
Step 1
Start by preheating your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Prepare two 9-inch cake pans by greasing and flouring them to ensure your cake comes out easily after baking. In a mixing bowl, sift together the cake flour and baking soda, setting it aside for later use.
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine the vegetable shortening and 1 1/2 cups of sugar. Use a mixer to mash them together until they are well blended. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. In a separate small bowl, mix the red food coloring with water, then stir in the cocoa powder to create a smooth paste. Incorporate this paste into the shortening mixture, blending until combined.
Step 3
Next, in another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, salt, vanilla extract, and apple cider vinegar. Gradually mix this into the colored shortening mixture, alternating with the flour mixture, until everything is well combined. Be sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl to incorporate all ingredients. Once your batter is ready, pour it evenly into the prepared cake pans.
Step 4
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean. Once baked, allow the cakes to cool completely in the pans before transferring them to a wire rack.
Step 5
For the frosting, whisk together the milk and all-purpose flour in a saucepan until there are no lumps. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly until it thickens, which should take about a minute. Once thickened, pour it into a mixing bowl and let it cool completely, at least 30 minutes.
Step 6
When the mixture is cool, add the softened butter and beat with an electric mixer until well combined. Then, add the vanilla extract and 2 cups of sugar, mixing on medium speed until the frosting is light and fluffy, which should take about 3 minutes. Now your frosting is ready to spread!
Step 7
Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate and generously spread frosting on top. Add the second layer and frost the top and sides of the cake. For an extra touch, you can decorate with sprinkles or chocolate shavings if desired. Enjoy your delicious red velvet cake!
