Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Festive Star Challah for Hanukkah.
Step 1
Start by gathering your ingredients and placing 1 cup of warm water, 2 eggs, 1 1/4 teaspoons of salt, 3 tablespoons of sugar, 3 2/3 cups of bread flour, and 1 teaspoon of active dry yeast into the pan of your bread machine. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the order of ingredients, and select the Dough setting to begin the mixing process.
Step 2
Once the dough cycle is complete, carefully remove the dough from the machine and place it on a floured work surface. Let it rest for about 15 minutes, covering it with a towel or a large bowl to keep it from drying out.
Step 3
After the dough has rested, knead it a few times to bring it together. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a rope about 10 inches long and 1 inch in diameter, creating the strands for your star.
Step 4
Prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper. Take 3 of the ropes and lay them on the sheet, pinching the ends together to form a pointed triangle. Then, take the remaining 3 ropes and weave them over and under the points of the first triangle to create a second, interwoven triangle. Pinch the edges tightly to secure your beautiful 6-pointed star.
Step 5
Now, find a warm spot in your kitchen and let the star rise until it has doubled in size, which should take about 30 to 45 minutes. This is the perfect time to preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 6
While the oven is heating, whisk together 1 egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of water. Brush this mixture over the surface of your challah, and sprinkle sesame seeds on top for that extra crunch and flavor.
Step 7
Finally, bake your challah in the preheated oven for about 35 minutes, or until it’s shiny, golden brown, and sounds hollow when tapped. The aroma will fill your kitchen, making it hard to wait!
How to Serve
Serve warm, sliced, and with a side of honey or jam for a delightful treat during your Hanukkah celebrations.
How to Store
Store any leftover challah in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
