Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Homemade Granny Smith Apple Jam.
Step 1
Begin by gathering a large pot and combining your chopped Granny Smith apples with white sugar, light brown sugar, lemon juice, lemon zest, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, ground cloves, and allspice.
Step 2
Heat the mixture over medium-high heat until it reaches a rolling boil, stirring occasionally.
Step 3
Keep boiling until the apples soften and the jam hits the gelling point of 220°F (104°C), which typically takes around 45 minutes.
Step 4
To check if your jam is ready, drop a small spoonful onto a cold plate and freeze it for a few minutes; if it gels, you’re good to go.
Step 5
Next, prepare your canning jars and lids by boiling them in water for at least five minutes to sterilize.
Step 6
Carefully fill the hot apple jam into the sterilized jars, leaving about a quarter-inch of headspace at the top.
Step 7
Use a knife or thin spatula to gently release any trapped air bubbles, then wipe the rims of the jars with a damp paper towel for a clean seal.
Step 8
Secure the lids on top and twist the rings firmly.
Step 9
In a large stockpot, place a rack at the bottom and fill it halfway with water.
Step 10
Bring the water to a boil, then lower the filled jars into the pot using a jar holder, ensuring there’s a two-inch gap between each jar.
Step 11
If necessary, add more boiling water to cover the jars by at least an inch.
Step 12
Cover the pot and process the jars in boiling water for ten minutes.
Step 13
Once done, carefully remove the jars and set them on a cloth-covered or wooden surface, leaving space between them to cool.
Step 14
After they’ve cooled, press the center of each lid to check the seal; if it doesn’t pop back, you’ve achieved a tight seal.
Step 15
Store your beautifully sealed jars in a cool, dark place, and relish the satisfaction of your homemade apple jam.
