Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Japanese Sushi Rice.
Step 1
To start making your delicious sushi rice, begin by rinsing the rice in a large, deep bowl filled with cold water.
Step 2
Gently rub the rice with your hands, watching as the water turns a milky white.
Step 3
Carefully pour off the cloudy water, making sure not to lose any precious grains.
Step 4
Repeat this rinsing process three to four times until the water runs clear enough that you can see the rice through about three inches of water.
Step 5
Once rinsed, drain the rice in a fine strainer and transfer it to a saucepan.
Step 6
If youβre using konbu, add it now along with three cups of water.
Step 7
Let the rice soak for 30 minutes to absorb all that goodness.
Step 8
While the rice is soaking, mix together rice vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl until everything is fully dissolved.
Step 9
Set this flavorful mixture aside for later.
Step 10
After soaking, cover the saucepan and bring the rice to a boil over high heat.
Step 11
Once itβs bubbling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 15 minutes.
Step 12
When the time is up, remove the saucepan from the heat but keep it covered for an additional five minutes to let the rice finish cooking in its own steam.
Step 13
Now, transfer the cooked rice to a large bowl and discard the konbu.
Step 14
Gently stir in the vinegar mixture, ensuring every grain is coated and there are no lumps left behind.
Step 15
Allow the rice to cool to room temperature, and for an extra shiny finish, you can use an electric fan to cool it down quickly.
Step 16
Enjoy the process and the delightful aroma as you create the perfect base for your sushi!.
