Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Lithuanian Honey Liqueur (Viryta).
Step 1
Start by peeling the lemon and orange in long, circular strips. Let the peels dry in a warm, dry spot for about 24 hours. This step is crucial as it enhances the flavor of your liqueur.
Step 2
In a large pot, combine the honey, 1 cup of water, white sugar, caraway seeds, whole cloves, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Stir the mixture well and bring it to a rolling boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 45 minutes, allowing all those wonderful flavors to meld together.
Step 3
After 45 minutes, add the dried citrus peels to the pot and continue to simmer for an additional 15 minutes. The aroma will be heavenly!
Step 4
Once done, remove the pot from heat and carefully discard the fruit peels. Now, stir in the grain alcohol and the remaining 2 1/2 cups of water into the honey mixture. This will give your liqueur its signature kick!
Step 5
Transfer the mixture into a glass container and seal it tightly with a lid. Store it in a cool place away from direct sunlight. Let it sit for a week, gently swirling the container every few days to mix the flavors.
Step 6
After a week, strain the mixture through double-layered cheesecloth to remove any sediment. Finally, pour your beautiful liqueur into bottles or decanters and seal them. Your homemade Lithuanian Honey Liqueur is now ready to be enjoyed!
