Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Pennsylvania Dutch Potato Stuffing.
Step 1
Begin by placing your potato cubes into a spacious pot and covering them with salted water.
Step 2
Bring the water to a vigorous boil over high heat, then lower the heat to medium-low, cover the pot, and let the potatoes simmer until they are tender, which should take about 25 minutes.
Step 3
Once cooked, drain the potatoes and allow them to steam dry for a couple of minutes.
Step 4
Meanwhile, in a large skillet, melt half a cup of butter over medium heat.
Step 5
Add the diced onions and celery, stirring occasionally until they become beautifully reduced and golden brown, which will take around 30 minutes.
Step 6
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9x13-inch glass baking dishes by greasing them lightly.
Step 7
In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine the half cup of butter with the cooked potatoes.
Step 8
Start mixing on low speed, gradually incorporating four torn slices of bread, one cup of milk, and a tablespoon of seasoned salt until everything is well blended.
Step 9
Next, add four more torn slices of bread along with the remaining half cup of milk, mixing until combined.
Step 10
Finally, toss in two additional torn slices of bread and mix until just incorporated.
Step 11
Now, fold in the onion and celery mixture, along with four more torn slices of bread, half a cup of butter, and another tablespoon of seasoned salt.
Step 12
Mix until everything is well combined, then add two to four more torn slices of bread, allowing the mixer to run until you achieve your desired consistency.
Step 13
Slice the remaining half cup of butter into thin pieces.
Step 14
Divide the potato filling evenly between the prepared baking dishes, topping each with the sliced butter and the last tablespoon of seasoned salt.
Step 15
Cover the dishes with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven until the filling is golden brown, which should take about an hour.
Step 16
Enjoy the delightful aroma as it fills your kitchen, promising a comforting dish that’s perfect for any gathering.
