Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Puerto Rican Shepherd's Pie (Pastelón).
Step 1
To create a delicious sofrito, start by blending together onion, green bell pepper, parsley, cilantro, culantro, garlic, and a splash of water until you achieve a smooth consistency.
Step 2
Once blended, transfer the mixture to a bowl, cover it, and pop it in the refrigerator until you're ready to use it.
Step 3
Next, heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef.
Step 4
Cook the beef, stirring often, until it’s beautifully browned and crumbly.
Step 5
Stir in two tablespoons of your freshly made sofrito, then season the mixture with sazon, black pepper, and adobo to taste.
Step 6
Don’t forget to drain any excess grease before setting the beef aside.
Step 7
While you’re preparing the other ingredients, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Step 8
In another skillet, pan-fry the plantains over medium heat until they turn golden and soft, which should take about 3 to 5 minutes.
Step 9
Once they’re ready, remove them from the heat.
Step 10
Now, grab a deep baking dish and start layering: first, spread half of the fried plantains across the bottom.
Step 11
Next, pour four beaten eggs over the plantains, followed by the seasoned beef mixture.
Step 12
Add a layer of drained green beans on top, then finish with the remaining plantains.
Step 13
Pour the last four beaten eggs evenly over everything and sprinkle a little adobo seasoning for extra flavor.
Step 14
Place the dish in your preheated oven and bake for 30 to 45 minutes, or until the eggs are set and firm.
Step 15
The aroma wafting through your kitchen will be irresistible, and soon you’ll have a comforting, hearty meal ready to enjoy!.
