Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make South African Bobotie Meatloaf.
Step 1
Start by preheating your oven to a cozy 350°F (175°C). Grab a large baking dish and give it a good greasing to prevent sticking. This is where all the magic will happen!
Step 2
In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until it’s bubbly and fragrant. Toss in the diced onions and sauté them until they turn a lovely golden brown, about 5 to 7 minutes. This step adds a wonderful depth of flavor to your dish!
Step 3
In a large mixing bowl, combine the 2 eggs, 1 cup of milk, oats, golden raisins, slivered almonds, vinegar, curry powder, sugar, salt, turmeric, and black pepper. Stir it all together until well mixed. Then, add in the sautéed onions and the lean ground beef, mixing everything until it’s nicely combined. This is where the flavors start to blend beautifully!
Step 4
Spread the beef mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish, making sure it’s nice and level. Now, for a touch of elegance, place the bay leaves on top. They’ll infuse the dish with their aromatic goodness as it bakes.
Step 5
Pop the dish into your preheated oven and let it bake for about 30 minutes. This is the perfect time to enjoy the delicious aromas wafting through your kitchen! After 30 minutes, take it out and carefully drain any excess fat from the beef. This will keep your dish from being too greasy.
Step 6
In a small bowl, beat together the remaining egg and 1/4 cup of milk. Pour this creamy mixture over the beef layer, giving it a lovely finish. Return the dish to the oven and continue baking until the top is beautifully browned, which should take about another 30 minutes. Keep an eye on it to ensure it doesn’t over-brown!
Step 7
Once done, remove the dish from the oven and let it cool slightly. Don’t forget to discard the bay leaves before serving. Now, you’re ready to enjoy a slice of this delightful South African classic!
How to Serve
Serve warm with a side of yellow rice and chutney for a traditional South African experience. A fresh salad can also complement the dish beautifully.
How to Store
Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven or microwave before serving.
