Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Spooky Mummy Cookies.
Step 1
Start by creaming together the softened butter and white sugar in a large mixing bowl using an electric mixer. Beat until the mixture is smooth and fluffy, which should take about 2-3 minutes. Next, add the eggs one at a time, ensuring each egg is fully incorporated before adding the next. Stir in the vanilla extract for that extra touch of flavor.
Step 2
In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually mix this dry mixture into the butter mixture until well combined. Once the dough comes together, shape it into a log and wrap it tightly in waxed paper, parchment, or plastic wrap. Pop it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes to firm up.
Step 3
While the dough chills, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This is the perfect time to get your baking trays ready, lined with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
Step 4
Once the dough is firm, take it out of the fridge and slice it into narrow wedges, about 3 inches long. Place these on your prepared baking tray. For the mummies' heads, roll small teaspoon-sized pieces of dough into balls, flatten them slightly, and press them onto the wide ends of the wedges.
Step 5
Bake the cookies in the preheated oven for about 8 minutes, or until the edges are dry and the cookies are set. Let them cool on the tray for a minute before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Step 6
Now for the fun part! In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips and solid vegetable shortening. Heat in the microwave on low power for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 20 seconds until the mixture is melted and smooth. If it gets too thick, just pop it back in the microwave for a few seconds and stir again.
Step 7
Using a small spatula or butter knife, coat the tops of each cookie with the melted white chocolate. Don’t worry about making it perfect; the more drippy and messy, the better it looks for mummies!
Step 8
To create the mummy's bandages, use a toothpick to score lines in the white chocolate coating. Finally, place miniature chocolate chips on the mummies' heads for their eyes, and voilà! Your spooky treats are ready to impress!
