Step 1
Start by placing the grated orange zest into a saucepan and adding enough water to cover it. Bring this mixture to a boil and let it cook for about 5 minutes. Once done, strain the zest through a mesh strainer, returning it to the saucepan. Add 1/2 cup of granulated sugar and 1/4 cup of water to the zest. Bring it back to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium-low. Stir constantly until the water evaporates, and let it cool until lukewarm.
Step 2
Preheat your oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Grease and flour a 9x5 inch loaf pan to ensure your bread comes out easily after baking.
Step 3
In a mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this dry mixture aside for later use. In another bowl, whisk the egg and 1 cup of granulated sugar until well combined. Stir in the melted butter and milk, followed by the cooled orange zest mixture until everything is blended together. Gradually add the flour mixture, stirring gently until just moistened. Be careful not to overmix!
Step 4
Pour the batter into your prepared loaf pan and smooth the top. Bake in the preheated oven for 55 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Once baked, allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
