Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Classic Chewy French Baguette.
Step 1
In a 2-cup measuring cup, dissolve the sugar in the hot water. Add the active dry yeast and stir gently. Allow the mixture to sit until it becomes foamy, about 5 minutes.
Step 2
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture. Stir gently from the center until the mixture becomes sticky.
Step 3
Knead the dough by hand, adding more flour as necessary, until it is elastic and no longer sticky, which should take about 10 minutes.
Step 4
Lightly oil a large, clean bowl and place the dough inside, turning it to coat. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
Step 5
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Fill a roasting pan with water and place it on the lower rack of the oven. Line a baking sheet with a silicone mat.
Step 6
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and transfer it to a lightly floured surface. Shape the dough into one large loaf or divide it into six smaller sandwich loaves, tapering the ends. Place the loaves on the prepared baking sheet and make 3 to 4 diagonal slashes across the tops, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep. Cover with a dry towel and let rise until doubled in size, about 40 minutes.
Step 7
Uncover the loaves and bake in the center of the preheated oven until the tops are light golden brown, which should take 15 to 20 minutes depending on the size of the loaves.
