Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Mediterranean Olive and Onion Bread.
Step 1
Start by sprinkling the yeast over 1/2 cup of warm water in a small bowl. Make sure the water is no hotter than 100°F (40°C). Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast softens and forms a creamy foam on top. This is the magic moment when your yeast comes to life!
Step 2
While the yeast is working its magic, heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and diced red onions, cooking and stirring for about 3 minutes until the onions become soft and fragrant. Once done, remove the skillet from heat and set the onions aside.
Step 3
In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread flour, salt, sugar, chopped dill, garlic powder (if using), and the cooked onions. Mix these dry ingredients well to ensure an even distribution of flavors. Now, add the yeast mixture and the remaining 1 3/4 cups of warm water. Stir until everything comes together into a sticky dough.
Step 4
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 8 minutes, or until it becomes smooth and elastic. This is a great workout for your arms and a wonderful way to connect with your food!
Step 5
Once kneaded, lightly oil a large bowl and place the dough inside, turning it to coat with oil. Cover the bowl with a light cloth and let it rise in a warm spot (ideally between 80°F to 95°F or 27°C to 35°C) until it doubles in size, which should take about 1 hour.
Step 6
After the dough has risen, lightly grease two baking sheets. Gently deflate the dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Use a knife to divide the dough into two equal pieces—be careful not to tear it. Shape each piece into a round loaf and place them on the prepared baking sheets. Cover the loaves with a damp cloth and let them rise again until doubled in size, about 40 minutes.
Step 7
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C).
Step 8
Once the loaves have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for about 40 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bottoms sound hollow when tapped. The aroma will fill your kitchen and make your mouth water!
Step 9
Allow the loaves to cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy this delicious Mediterranean Olive and Onion Bread warm, or store it for later.
