Cooking Instructions
Follow our step-by-step guide on how to make Wesleyan Bread.
Step 1
Start by dissolving 2 teaspoons of sugar in 1 cup of lukewarm water. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the water and let it soften for about 5 to 10 minutes. This is the moment when the yeast awakens, so be patient!
Step 2
In a large bowl, combine the molasses, salt, 6 tablespoons of sugar, and melted shortening with the remaining 3 cups of lukewarm water. Stir until everything is well dissolved. The sweet aroma of molasses will fill your kitchen!
Step 3
Next, add the raisins, sifted flour, and caraway seeds to the mixture. Mix everything together until a dough begins to form. It’s time to get your hands a little floury!
Step 4
Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for about 10 to 15 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic. This is a great workout for your arms!
Step 5
Once kneaded, place the dough in a well-oiled bowl and brush the top with a bit of melted shortening. Cover it with a cloth and let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, which should take about an hour. Use this time to clean up or prepare your favorite spread for the bread!
Step 6
After the first rise, punch down the dough gently and let it rise again until it doubles in size, another hour of waiting. Patience is key!
Step 7
Lightly grease two 9x5 inch loaf pans. On a floured surface, punch down the dough again and divide it into two portions. Shape each portion into a loaf and place them into the prepared pans. Cover with a cloth and allow them to rise until they double in size once more.
Step 8
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
Step 9
When the loaves have risen beautifully, bake them in the preheated oven for about 1 hour, or until they are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. The smell will be irresistible!
